The MHP browser pontegra from NIONEX for implementation of interactive TV services also convinces Austrians

The specialist for solutions in digital and mobile communication, Sony NetServices, will use the MHP* (Mulitmedia Home Platform) browser pontegra in the development and implementation of its iTV services. Initially the interactive services are to be run by the largest private Austrian broadcaster ATVplus. In doing so, ATVplus is breaking new ground in communication with viewers.

Direct communication between television viewers and TV stations as well as supplemental information about the current program which is much more in-depth than the information offered on Teletext is the new wave. Watching television has long been a passive event. In the age of media convergence, however, through the introduction of DVB-T and the availability of interactive TV platforms like MHP, digitalization has transformed the medium television increasingly from a one-sided communication channel to a "meta-medium".

The innovative television broadcaster ATVplus is following exactly this trend. The broadcaster will soon be offering its viewers, among other things, additional information about programs and interactive TV games based on MHP. By doing so, ATVplus is following a current trend in Europe which has prompted innovative broadcasters in Italy, Finland, Germany and Austria, among other places to use the available technology to make TV interactive and more interesting, as well as to open up new sources of revenue through, for instance, interactive advertising.

Sony NetServices will be developing the interactive services for ATVplus on the basis of pontegra. "With the development and implementation of interactive TV we can set new milestones in Austrian television. We are very pleased to be working together with ATVplus on this breakthrough," comments Christoph de Jong, project manager at Sony NetServices. "The technology developed by Nionex, pontegra, is perfect for setting this up. Their concept, the functional range, the performance and their support have fully convinced us."
