AIIM surveys users and prospective users at its Content Management Solutions Seminar Series (CMSS) programs about the current status of ECM deployment within their organization, perceived obstacles to deploying ECM technologies, business drivers, and implementation plans for the next 12-18 months. During the first six months of 2004, AIIM surveyed 220 end users at events in Dallas, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, New York, and Washington, DC.
"Clearly, ECM technologies are moving from the department to the enterprise," notes AIIM President John F. Mancini. "User organizations are beginning to realize that ECM technologies represent a core piece of their information infrastructure -- a piece that is critical to compliance and cost-reduction."
According to A.J. Hyland, 2004 Chair of AIIM and President and CEO of Hyland Software, "Users are perhaps more practical in their view of information technology than at any point in the past five years. The core building blocks of the ECM industry -- imaging, document management, and records management -- are becoming essential elements as organizations struggle to move from managing just data to managing both data and documents."
Key Survey Findings:
* 60% of those surveyed are still in the early stages of understanding Enterprise Content Management.
* User project interests over the next 12-18 months center around Records Management & Archiving (48%), Document Control (39%), Forms Handling (36%) and Information Capture (36%).
* User technology interests match this practical focus: web content management (45%), scanning & image processing (41%), records management (40%), electronic document management (36%).
* Risk reduction and cost control -- rather than revenue growth -- are clearly driving user interest in ECM technologies.
* Differentiating among suppliers (6% of respondents) is not the biggest obstacle facing potential end users of ECM technologies. Justifying the investment (23%) and change management (22%) are the top concerns of potential end users.
