The Otto Group, a long-time Intershop customer, plans to deploy Linux as its future server operating system for all e-commerce activities. A corresponding announcement was made as part of Intershop's annual press conference at CeBIT 2005, allowing partners Novell and Intershop to present their first major joint customer project.

Adopting the new Intershop Enfinity Suite 6 software across the Otto Group's e-commerce operations is key to successful realization of the latest Otto-Intershop project.

The technology platform for this e-commerce solution comprises blade server systems that enable high performance in an extremely compact form factor. As a first step, the existing web server systems at Otto were migrated to SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 in November 2004. These systems have proven to be exceptionally powerful and stable. In the context of the new project, the first application servers at Otto will be transitioned from mid-2005, with the project due for completion in the first half of 2006.

"We expect to achieve significant cost savings by deploying Linux in e-commerce scenarios across the Otto Group," says Christoph Dyballa, Otto's IT director. "Thanks to its vendor independence, Linux ensures a high level of flexibility."

"Just a few months in, the partnership between Intershop and Novell is already proving to be a surefire recipe for success, as demonstrated by this major project for Otto," comments Horst Nebgen, managing director of Novell Deutschland GmbH. "We are confident that we will be able to successfully realize similar large-scale projects in the near future in conjunction with Intershop."

The Otto Group is a long-time customer of Intershop Communications AG and the flagship e-commerce site www.otto.de, based on Intershop Enfinity, has an excellent track record of cost-effective performance going back several years. Otto and Intershop are currently migrating the Group's German-language e-commerce sites, such as www.otto.de, www.heine.de, www.baur.de, www.sportscheck.de, www.schwab.de, all of which are powered by Enfinity.
