Vignette Corp. announced the general availability of Vignette(R) Portal release 7.2, among the most robust portal solution for organizations looking to benefit from greater reuse of technology resources, faster delivery of Web-based business applications, and increased ability to locate and make use of critical business resources. This latest portal release extends Vignette's traditional realms of personalization, identity management, reporting, collaboration, content management and application integration. Vignette Portal advances the company's vision for true service-oriented architectures (SOA) and enables customers to bring large-scale portals to market faster than ever.

Although the concept of SOA is not new, Vignette is among the first to offer a product that capitalizes on its benefits. Vignette Portal provides organizations with a platform on which they can quickly assemble applications from standards-based components. This enables companies to rapidly deploy Web solutions that incorporate highly complex, data-rich applications throughout the enterprise. In addition, Vignette has extended its ability to consume third-party standards-based portlet applications based on the Web Services for Remote Portlets standard (WSRP), which it helped to co-author. Whether created in Java or .NET, WSRP portlets are equally viable when consumed by Vignette Portal, helping organizations achieve greater interoperability among disparate business applications.

"Service-oriented architectures have great potential to improve the financial returns on investments in corporate computing resources by combining information and application components and deliver them in the context of a business process," said Brian McDonough, research manager of Enterprise Portal Software and Packaged Composite Applications at IDC. "Organizations worldwide considering new portal deployments, or consolidating existing portals, should evaluate the services and capabilities required to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of its employees. The vendors that can quickly launch scalable deployments with demonstrable business value through an integrated portal platform with an appropriate mix of standards use, functionality and technology partnerships should be strongly considered."

As organizations adopt software systems, cost containment through the integration of existing functionality becomes a priority. Componentizing business logic into reusable services according to defined standards enables businesses to more efficiently manage their operations. This is accomplished through the assembly of custom dashboards, self-service applications and personalized content that provide comprehensive views of revenue opportunities, supply chains, customer interactions and more. Vignette Portal's aggregation and presentation framework, combined with Vignette(R) Builder's advanced composite application support and Vignette(R) Business Integration Studio's Web services integration framework, is the service delivery platform enterprises need to effectively manage IT costs and gain competitive advantage.

In addition, Vignette Portal offers some of the broadest support in the industry for application servers, databases, operating systems and user directories, helping customers integrate disparate data and processes and consolidate multiple sites. Vignette Portal is flexible enough to support today's technology infrastructures and tomorrow's demands. With Vignette Portal, large-scale portals supporting millions of registered users can be delivered more rapidly, easily evolve to support changing business requirements, and perform better when integrating with large user directories.

"We believe Vignette leads the industry in supporting an organization's portal integration, Web site consolidation and application aggregation initiatives through its adherence to industry standards and Web Services support," said Conleth O'Connell, chief technology officer at Vignette. "For more than six years, Vignette Portal enhancements have been driven by feedback from our customers looking to increase their competitive differentiation by offering a more complete user experience. Our shared goal is to drive efficiencies in the creation, day-to-day usage, and overall management of portal initiatives with emphasis on scalability, ease of use and speed to results."

Vignette Portal release 7.2, which offers fifth-generation portal capabilities as defined by leading industry analysts, extends its leading capabilities with the following advances:

-- Enhanced out-of-the-box search capabilities that allow users to query a wide range of internal and external data sources, including Microsoft Exchange Server, Lotus Notes, relational databases, file systems and Web sites. Search queries can be federated across multiple indexes, providing search interfaces for multiple managed and unmanaged repositories.

-- The ability to derive personalization rules from multiple data sources, facilitating superior segmentation and audience definition.

-- The ability to link personalization attributes and mined data from multiple systems across the organization, providing flexibility in how user information is defined and shared across the organization. This capability is particularly valuable in distributed extranets and large-scale intranets.

-- The complementary Vignette(R) Dynamic Portal Module fundamentally changes how content-centric portal sites can be created and delivered. This integration technology between Vignette Portal and Vignette(R) Content Management helps reduce portal administration costs and offers users per-request personalization that leverages reusable templates to deliver diverse sets of data from Vignette Web Content Management to highly targeted audiences. This can significantly lower the cost of quickly delivering portal sites with large volumes of content based on a few highly flexible templates.

-- Integration with Vignette(R) Records and Documents through the use of standards-based JSR-168 portlets. These portlets deliver case management and document management access to intranet sites within Vignette Portal without the need to write custom code. Portal users can search across multiple repositories with a single search query and integrate work delivery via a single integrated information interface.

The latest version of the Vignette Portal also advances support for globally distributed portal deployments. Included in this release is the ability to synchronize disparate portal clusters, allowing organizations with multiple portal deployments in separate geographies to maintain their portal installations as a single source of truth across the organization. Vignette Portal also implements an administrative component API that can be used to encapsulate Web applications that plug into the Vignette Portal administrative console, providing a single, universal administrative interface to manage all Web applications.
