RedDot Solutions, provider of enterprise content management (ECM) solutions for midmarket organisations, and a wholly owned subsidiary of Hummingbird Ltd., announces that The National Archives, whose vast collection of archive documents spans almost 1,000 years of British history, is undergoing a major shift in the way it operates its web business, as it implements RedDot’s Content Management System (CMS) to support its 7,000-page website www.nationalarchives.gov.uk <http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk>.
With its vast stakeholder community - ranging from schoolchildren to information management professionals and businesses - The National Archives will use RedDot CMS to ensure every visitor has easy access to the information they need - regardless of their interests.
RedDot Solutions is streamlining The National Archives’ approach to site management. A team of 40 specialist content owners, holding various roles throughout the organisation, will use the system to take direct responsibility for the site’s content, replacing a system whereby content updates were forwarded to the organisation’s web team for publication. RedDot CMS will ensure that new information is published promptly and in line with the organisation’s style guide, whilst automatically removing out of date material.
Each month, The National Archives publishes a slew of declassified documents under the Freedom of Information Act, to its website. Most recent examples include: -
· The Nazis’ ill-fated sabotage and propaganda efforts from World War II, including the now-notorious chocolate-bar grenades
· Mick Jagger’s claims of police corruption following a 1969 drug raid
· Details of 1984 author George Orwell’s covert surveillance by Special Branch.
RedDot CMS includes a number of intuitive features; allowing users to ‘drag and drop’ content from Word and other office applications directly into pages, and edit existing web content directly, the system ensures new content can be created and published fast - whilst respecting branding and publishing guidelines.

"RedDot will facilitate faster uploading of content as each of our departments can directly input content into their own areas. RedDot was the obvious choice as it is easy to use and has an extensive customer base. Future plans include the extension of the system to support The National Archives intranet.”

The Family Records Centre, Islington, which is jointly managed by The National Archives and the Office for National Statistics, holds the indexes (not the certificates themselves) for births, deaths and marriages for England and Wales from July 1837 and also copies of wills, before 1858, from the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC) and some other church courts.
