Integration in Jetspeed portal server and basis for group-wide intranet:

The Otto Group, the world's largest mail-order group with business activities in the four segments, multi-channel retail, financial services, service, and wholesale decided to replace the Gauss VIP Content Management System with the FIRSTspirit integration platform from Dortmund CMS specialist The e-Spirit Company GmbH.

Extensive selection process:

At the conclusion of an extensive selection process, which started at the end of 2004, the decision was made to introduce a new CMS technology on FIRSTspirit. Previously the selected systems had been precisely analysed in the area of usability by the department involved, as well as by the IT department in project-specific and test-specific test configuations. One operative criterion for the decision in favor of FIRSTspirit was the open architechture, which enables fast and simple integration within the existing infrastructure, particularly in the portal environment.

Integration in the Jetspeed Open Source Enterprise Information Portal:

In the first step FIRSTspirit was integrated in the existing Jetspeed Portal Server. In this regard, particular attention was paid to the integration of the navigation: All menu options of the portal navigation maintained editorially in FIRSTspirit can be assigned role-specific permissions. The portal server evaluates this information at runtime and only displays information to the logged-in portal users for which permission is present. The seamless integration of FIRSTspirit in the Jetspeed Enterprise Information Portal ensures that content, navigations, permissions, and roles are managed at a single point only.

In addition to managing parts of the portal navigation, editorial content, media, and documents are maintained via FIRSTspirit and delivered to the portal taking the rights and role concept into account.

Synergy through platform strategy:

In order to fully use FIRSTspirit as integration platform and maximimize the synergy effects, the existing intranet will migrate from the installed CMS Gauss VIP to FIRSTspirit, in a second step.

Jens Werschmoeller, responsible IT project mananger had this to say about FIRSTspirit: "FIRSTspirit resolves the conflict of interest existing between usability, flexibility, and resourse utilizlation for several of the Otto Group's projects (intranet, Group portal) in a very elegant manner. The user gets entry possibilities for his content that are both simple and flexible at the same time. In this regard the IT orgainzation can generate precise CI specifications via differentiated templates and administration gets a software system that is easy to maintain. The access API performs valuable services for connecting to the portal."

Thus the Dortmund ECMS manufacturer e-Spirit has again proved the advantages of FIRSTspirit as integration platform, and further reinforced their leading role in the area of portal server integration.
