Stellent Announces Strategy for Leveraging RSS in Enterprise Content Management Framework
EDEN PRAIRIE, MN, Feb. 14, 2006 — Stellent, Inc. (Nasdaq: STEL), a global provider of content management solutions, announced today a new strategy for leveraging really simple syndication (RSS) within an enterprise content management (ECM) framework.
RSS is an XML format used to portray a list of Web content via short titles and summaries with links to Web pages and content or blog posts. The technology is quickly gaining popularity because it allows organizations to quickly and easily distribute multiple types of content while giving users the flexibility to subscribe to only the information they want or need. RSS readers enable users to access content from their desktop, portals and email clients, and are available as incorporated functionality or free plug-ins.
According to Forrester Research,1 ECM vendors need to think out of the DAM and WCM box. Social computing technologies such as blogs, wikis and RSS are natural extensions to WCM.
New and enhanced Stellent® Universal Content Management™ capabilities make it easier for customers to distribute and integrate content managed within an ECM architecture.
"RSS provides a mechanism to deliver exactly what the subscriber wants from the Stellent system,” said Dan Ryan, executive vice president of marketing and business development for Stellent. "Users can browse the content and Web sites managed in Stellent Universal Content Management, conduct searches for content, and then subscribe to and receive individual content items or groups of content via an RSS feed. Additionally, with Stellent’s service-oriented architecture, search results and content services can be quickly and easily formatted into an RSS feed — delivering secure, personalized content and ECM ‘actions.’ For example, users can take advantage of RSS to receive content, such as intranet content, customer newsletter articles, collaboration projects and the latest downloads on a particular corporate Web page, as well as content services, such as a workflow inbox or a list of checked out items.”
Enhanced RSS Support in Stellent Universal Content Management
Stellent Universal Content Management’s new, out-of-the-box templates enable organizations to quickly deploy RSS feeds for intranet, extranet and public Web site content managed in the Stellent repository. The Stellent system automatically generates RSS feeds of managed content using metadata and rule sets. These feeds can be static lists or dynamic feeds that change depending on the viewer’s role and access privileges. Stellent users also may leverage external RSS feeds to display content from other online news sources within the branding parameters of their particular Web sites. And, users can utilize the system to monitor and distribute blog posts via RSS feeds.
In addition, Stellent Universal Content Management’s templates help organizations employ RSS feeds to integrate managed content with desktop applications and portals. For example, the system can distribute lists of managed content that are displayed within Microsoft Outlook and Web browsers. Similarly, the technology can display personal and collaborative feeds of content and actions, such as "My Workflows Inbox,” "My Checked Out Items,” "My Projects” and "My Saved Queries.” RSS feeds also offer a simple and seamless way to integrate Stellent-managed content into a portal infrastructure, facilitating quick displays of content and content management-based actions.
Additional functionality the Stellent system brings to RSS feeds includes:
- Ease of implementation — automatically generates feeds based on metadata and rule sets.
- Single-source content management and reuse — allows content to be modified or added in one instance with the change appearing in multiple RSS feeds, Web sites, portals, etc.
Security and personalization — enables entire lists or pieces of content to require a user name and password to gain access, and feeds can be customized to reflect a particular user and his or her processes.
- Usage analytics — leverages analytics, such as most accessed content or most popular knowledge base article, to create RSS feeds.
- Transformation — converts more than 370 file formats to Web and wireless formats, facilitating efficient delivery of content in native formats.
- Interactive content management actions via RSS — enables users to interact with content-centric applications from RSS readers, prompting them to review workflows, email project teams, check out and open content, etc.
- Richer content presentation — automatically includes thumbnails, text abstracts and selected metadata in RSS feeds, providing more descriptive information.
- Robust caching and publishing scenarios — facilitates optimal performance whether a list is static or dynamic.
