Both Phishing and Viruses have dropped to their lowest levels seen in years last month. This either represents the continuation of this trend, or a temporary break while those involved regroup and plan new campaigns.

OnlyMyEmail, Inc. has released their SpamStats summary of Spam activity tracked through www.OnlyMyEmail.com during May 2006.

Both Phishing and Viruses have dropped to their lowest levels seen in years for the month of May 2006. This either represents the continuation of this trend, or a temporary break while those involved regroup an plan new campaigns.

The slack in Phishing and Virus activity has been picked up by more traditional spam, which is now dominated by stock fraud, mortgages, fake Rolex watches, online medications and pirated software sales, with all other categories paling by comparison.

Overall, the Network Load of spam (including false addresses, directory and dictionary attacks) has moved up to now represent a record breaking 94.53% of all inbound email.

From the end user’s perspective, spam addressed to legitimate mailboxes also increased to now total 78.13% of all messages.
