Iceland’s capital Reykjavík recently started their new Internet appearance. Under www.rvk.is, visitors can access information on the Atlantic port with its approximately 170,000 inhabitants. The Icelandic contentXXL solution partner TM Software undertook the website relaunch, using the Business Content Management System contentXXL.

Reykjavik’s citizens are delighted. With new, improved functions and services, the portal www.rvk.is makes lots of information on the city available. And Western Europe’s northernmost city has quite a bit to offer. 41% of Iceland’s total population lives in Reykjavík, which explains why most faculties of the country’s university, a number of other colleges, theatres, museums and cultural institutions, as well as an open sea port, can be found here. Moreover, Reykjavík’s inhabitants dispose of an efficient public transportation system including several bus stations and an airport.

The Internet appearance was to be as modern and ambitious as the city itself. In order to guarantee the best service possible, expectations concerning the Content Management System in use were set high. It had to meet all the requirements that making a city portal entails. For instance, the site’s most diverse contents had to be linked optimally; it is necessary that the website can be maintained easily by editors without HTML-knowledge; another problem to be solved is the sheer abundance of data that has to be managed.

With the help of these criteria, the city of Reykjavik decided to use the 100% Microsoft ASP.NET-based CMS contentXXL for the website relaunch. It was particularly the standard integrated features Content Relation Management and WYSIWYG-Editor that convinced the city. Furthermore, contentXXL has already proved in numerous reference projects that it is perfectly able to realise internet appearances of cities and municipalities such as the German cities of Erlangen and Fürth.

The website relaunch was very successful and took only the shortest amount of time. The website offers a comprehensive insight into all the services provided by the City of Reykjavík. Thanks to the Content Relationship Management, visitors of the website can now find the most diverse information. An overview over the different quarters shows where to find institutions, for example schools, hospitals, residential homes for the elderly, etc., that are closest to the visitor’s home. The integrated agenda indicates where and when the city’s upcoming cultural events will take place. The agenda itself can easily and quickly be maintained by editors without HTML-knowledge thanks to the WYSIWYG-Editor. Another feature of the website enables users to access the latest news and vacancies, so that they are optimally informed around the clock. By providing the most important emergency contact data, the website clearly helps to make Reykjavik’s citizens safer. The city’s politicians use the website to present themselves to potential voters; each of them has a short CV online.

The website relaunch with contentXXL was realised by the Icelandic contentXXL solution partner TM Software, who also undertook the localisation of the software into Icelandic.
