The Icelandic transport and logistics company Eimskip, a subsidiary of Avion group, relaunched its internet presence in 2005. The company, online under www.eimskip.com and www.eimskip.is, went through major reconstruction of its websites. contentXXL’s solution partner TM Software created the websites with the Business Content Management System contentXXL.

Eimskip, based in Iceland’s capital Reykjavik, was the first Icelandic shipping company. Throughout the years, the company has successfully developed into a comprehensive transport and logistics company with approximately 4,000 employees. Eimskip is active worldwide and has a global logistics network. It was therefore necessary to change the company’s websites. The new websites had to meet international standards and needed to provide customers with extensive information on Eimskip’s services and activities.

What was required from the Content Management System

The content management system to be used for the website had to meet high standards. Eimskip wanted the system to be able to manage both the Icelandic presence on www.eimskip.is and the international version on www.eimskip.com, as well as the websites of Eimskip’s subsidiary companies. Hence, a close connection between different websites and an easy data exchange were essential requirements. Moreover, the websites should in parts be linked to internal data bases of the company, so that current data such as timetables, staff lists, and much more, would be available online.

Because of its global presence, Eimskip required to have it’s websites in at least two languages and therefore needed an easy language switch. Eimskip did not want to redo its website from scratch for each language and furthermore, it was important to avoid additional licensing costs for each new portal.

Why Eimskip decided in favour of contentXXL

contentXXL, a Content Management System based 100% upon Microsoft .NET technology, seemed the ideal solution to meet these requirements. It was the standard multilingual options of the content management system that convinced Eimskip. This feature allows a quick and easy language switch via a simple drop-down-menu, which makes translations much easier. A standard WYSIWYG-editor also spoke for contentXXL. Thanks to this feature, editors with no knowledge of HTML can locally maintain and update the websites of the various subsidiaries. Thus, Eimskip can save a lot of money for staff training aiming at higher quality and up-to-dateness of the provided information. The Content Management System contentXXL links different contents efficiently, so that visitors of the website can easily get comprehensive information on Eimskip and its services. Due to many years of successful cooperation with contentXXL solution partner, TM Software further facilitated Eimskip’s decision, as the company knew it was in good hands.

How contentXXL realised the websites

www.eimskip.com was the first Eimskip website to go online, followed by the Icelandic version www.eimskip.is. Customers and prospective customers can now get a comprehensive overview on the company and access important information such as sailing schedules, tariffs and contact information. The website furthermore offers the opportunity to calculate prices online and to find out the current position of a certain vessel. An interactive world map shows the visitor, where you can find Eimskip and its subsidiaries around the world. "The new website offers innumerable possibilities to get information on the company and its services. The Business Content Management System was the ideal solution to the requirements and convinced by its numerous standard features”, praises Stefán Þór Stefánsson from TM Software.

What to expect in the future

The website being realised with success, more portals are already planned. In addition, forms are to be designed and provided to improve customer services.

25.10.2006, Simone Sellner
