Intelligent variant management with TCToolbox Workgroup Edition
If a product is distributed in two slightly different versions - so-called variants - the associated technical documentation has to be changed accordingly. In addition to product-specific variants other variants such as customer, country and target-group-specific variants can be identified. TCToolbox Workgroup Edition helps documentation departments manage a high variance in products while at the same time keeping redundancy of information low. TCToolbox Workgroup Edition has been designed specifically for small and medium-sized technical documentation departments and comes with a powerful pre-configured DTD (Document Type Definition) which allows for handling of variants. Customer-specific DTDs can easily be extended to provide the information required for variant management. TCToolbox fully exploits the benefits of the open and platform-independent format XML. Complex documents are fragmented into smaller information modules, which can be processed and managed separately and are reused in different publications. The XML document itself contains the details about which variant is valid for the unique specification of the product. Variant attributes can be defined at any level of the DTD as well as for single elements, modules, graphics etc. Available editors are XMetaL and FrameMaker. Depending on the publishing requirements TCToolbox can be configured to handle any number of product variants. "At document check-in TCToolbox Workgroup Edition verifies if only defined variant values are assigned to information modules thus making sure that only the set of variant values identified for a specific product is referenced in the information modules" says Klaus Fenchel, Managing Director at Ovidius. "Variant management with TCToolbox not only helps you cut documentation costs but will also enhance quality assurance and decrease error-prone manual processes." 28.03.2008, Ovidius GmbH
