The city of Bochum is offering its nearly 400,000 residents a new web site. The science and service metropolis in the Ruhr area counted on the experts at CONET Solutions GmbH and their you@web software family for realization of the site. In addition to implementing the barrier-free accessibility prescribed by law as well as carrying out the desired restyling and integration of the city’s intranet, the web site also had to be set up with an eye to the needs of the citizens to have fast and user-friendly access to information.

"The implementation of barrier-free accessibility means above all an improvement in regard to supplying information to the visually impaired, the blind and those with physical handicaps. So-called screen readers with functional instructions or acoustic display descriptions explain page content to visually-impaired users,” comments Ralph Leitmann of the editorial department of the Bochum Press and Information Office. Moreover, residents of the city now have the option of using the extensive full-text search function according to key words.

Thanks to the new web site, not only employees of the main editorial department, but those of other offices, too, are now able to create their own content, which noticeably accelerates and tightens the publication process. User and access administration is carried out by means of a sophisticated rights and roles concept, whereby personalized content management by responsible editors is guaranteed. The newly set up intranet additionally offers Bochum city employees access to internal agency and municipal documents.

The you@web Content Manager forms the technical basis for the new web site as a Web Content Management System (WCMS). The product, developed by CONET, has the paramount goal of making the administration and maintenance of Internet and intranet solutions as simple as possible. The Content Manager thus guarantees economic operation of even large-volume web sites. you@web is flexible and scalable enough itself as standard software to be adaptable to specific customer requirements. By default it supports the complete creation and maintenance of accessible web sites according to the principles of the Barrier-Free Information Technology Act (Barrierefreie Informations-technik-Verordnung - BITV). Up to now, HTML knowledge was needed for the creation of content. The new system now assures the quick and easy maintenance and administration of Bochum’s Internet and intranet content.
