Vignette announced that the committee organising the Athens 2004 Olympic Games has chosen Vignette’s content management and portal solution to power the event’s official site www.athens2004.com. The site, which was set up in less than three months, already attracts over 12 million page views per day.

The Athens 2004 Olympic Games Web site contains a great deal of information on the schedule of events, the various athletic disciplines and the list of attending countries, as well as useful details regarding transport and accommodation facilities and a guide to the historical monuments of the city. The site also features a section devoted to children, offering games and an overview of the sporting personalities and history of the Olympics. With the official inauguration of the Games, the site will become an indispensable information tool, containing all the latest details on the events taking place or recently completed, as well as a news and interesting facts section.

Vignette’s robust and scalable platform enables the Athens 2004 Web site to handle a large amount of content and information and to effectively support intense peaks of traffic. This was a key requirement from the Olympic Committee, as traffic to the site is expected to rise to 100 million page views per day with a flow of 20,000 users per day while the Games are being held.

Vignette’s easy-to-use platform enables non-technical personnel at the Web Division of the Athens 2004 Communications Office to quickly, efficiently and easily update the site with various types of content such as video, images and XML files. The content management, distribution and publication processes are fully automated, resulting in a more cost-efficient operating model.

“Vignette’s content management solution, supporting open standards such as J2EE, XML and Web Services, perfectly fits the need for the kind of accessible, high-performance system required for a site such as that of the Olympic Games,” commented Gonzalo Usandizaga, Vice-President and General Manager of Vignette EMEA.

“We are very pleased that we were able to rapidly complete this important project, which involved the Vignette Professional Services’ Italian and French teams collaborating with the Greek Geeks (FDS), the Greek system integrator,” said Rosagrazia Bombini, Regional Director for Italy and Greece. “We believe that this is only the first of several new opportunities in this region”.
