Vignette Addresses Unique Needs of Higher Education Institutions

Vignette Corp. strengthened its leadership position in higher education vertical by adding native support for the Apple Macintosh browser to Vignette content management solutions, which when combined with existing Mac support in Vignette's portal products uniquely positions the company to provide world-class enterprise content management solutions to higher education institutions. Vignette solutions help universities and colleges worldwide consolidate the development and maintenance of Web properties while personalizing and enhancing communication with students, faculty, alumni and the community. With the addition of support for the Mac browser to complement existing support for the leading operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, Linux, Java(TM) and Microsoft .NET, Vignette continues to increase the distance between itself and competitors and strengthen its industry leadership in supporting its customers' heterogeneous IT environments.
The various versions of the Apple Macintosh OS are the de facto standard in industries such as education, publishing, graphic design and illustration. Mac OS users represent upward of 5 percent of the overall computing population and are some of the most demanding users. Vignette content management and portal solutions now enable the more than 25 million Mac users to easily create, manage and publish information to the Web, and manage the delivery channels for that information, through a single user interface.
"After an extensive evaluation of content management solutions, Texas State University selected Vignette(R) V7 content management in part because of its open architecture and ability to work in hybrid environments, including Macintosh compatibility," said Dr. Milt Nielsen, director of Instructional Technologies at Texas State University-San Marcos. "Many of the content consumers at Texas State University are default Macintosh users, so Vignette's ability to offer a powerful content management system accessible by a broad cross-section of users will help accelerate the rate of integration of our new system across our many constituencies for multiple applications."
Within higher education environments, numerous individuals are responsible for information as diverse as course syllabuses, campus maps and alumni relations and must abide by university policies, system processes and rules, security protocols, and state and federal laws. Vignette allows technical and nontechnical university employees and students to easily manage information on numerous internal and external Web sites. Vignette also streamlines the production, approval and publishing of Web content through its workflow support.
"The Web is increasingly playing a more significant role in the education process. Vignette continues to partner with leading universities to help build their visibility and enhance their educational programs," said David Shirk, senior vice president of products, strategy and worldwide marketing at Vignette. "The decision to support the Mac browser was taken based on our commitment to enhancing efficiency, lowering the total cost of ownership and increasing the effectiveness of online communications for our customers, regardless of their industry. This is a decision that makes sense for customers and for Vignette."
Vignette has long been a pioneer in delivering enterprise content management solutions that unify information, applications and business units, and it understands the challenges faced by customers who have heterogeneous IT environments. Support for the Mac browser follows the announcement earlier this year of support for Linux across Vignette's content management, integration and portal technology. With native support for Java(TM) J2EE(TM) and support for Microsoft .NET, Vignette content management helps customers tie together information and applications maintained virtually anywhere in their organizations.
Vignette's exceptional list of customers in the education market includes Ball State University, Carnegie Mellon University, City University of New York, Education Testing Service, Georgia Department of Education, Old Dominion University, Pepperdine University, University of California San Diego, University of California Los Angeles, University of Michigan, Texas A&M University, University of Miami, University of Wisconsin Madison, and United Kingdom eUniversities. 17.06.2004, Vignette Corp.
