META Group study identifies 10 ways in which Stellent Universal Content Management has enabled the global biotechnology company to increase the ease and speed of creating uniform, branded Websites

Stellent, Inc. (Nasdaq: STEL), a global provider of content management solutions, announced today that Genzyme Corp. (Nasdaq: GENZ), a global biotechnology company dedicated to making a major positive impact on the lives of people with serious diseases, will obtain a $3.8 million return-on-investment (ROI) by year-end from its Stellent® Universal Content Management implementation. This estimate is based on findings from a recently commissioned case study conducted by META Group, a leading information technology research and consulting firm.

Prior to 2001, Genzyme had one primary Website, which was difficult to update because content changes to the site needed to be made by internal IT staff or IT vendors. Simultaneously, Genzyme business units and departments wanted to create additional Websites to reach various patient, physician and payor groups around the world. With limited IT resources, multiple business units and departments began to create their own locally managed Websites to meet their specific needs.

“As a company serving patients in more than 30 countries worldwide, we understood the need for separate sites. However, as the number of independently managed sites grew, we quickly ran into messaging and branding inconsistencies. In addition, the sites being built in various countries were technically incompatible with our corporate IT standards,” said Craig St. Clair, manager of electronic communications for Genzyme. “Using the Web Content Management module of Stellent Universal Content Management, we now manage more than 20 unique Websites that are ‘on brand’ and encompass our businesses, products and geographies. Stellent’s solution also will allow us to leverage a shared technical and design infrastructure to build at least five new sites quickly and cost-effectively this year.”

META Group calculated Genzyme’s ROI through a study designed to measure the practicality of the company’s Stellent investment via a cost/benefit analysis. The study identified 10 ways that Stellent Web Content Management has enabled Genzyme to increase the ease and speed of creating uniform, branded Websites across five interconnected areas: corporate, country, product, business and disease state. Benefits included the elimination of site-maintenance outsourcing costs; reduced costs to launch new sites; reduced effort for site design, maintenance, administration and recovery through content and site coordination; and the ability to provide timely, immediate, coordinated content updates and user ownership.

“The ‘cost-of-doing-business’ requirements for organizational Websites have driven increased adoption of tools that return content creation, approval and life-cycle management functions to the business users,” said Andrew Warzecha, senior vice president for META Group. “These tools have become critical for avoiding IT bottlenecks and providing a consistent ‘look and feel’ to organizational Websites. And, Web content management solutions aid company compliance with a variety of regulatory and legal requirements that –– especially in the case of Genzyme –– can differ from product to product and country to country.”

“Genzyme is one of many organizations worldwide that turn to Stellent Universal Content Management to streamline the process of easily creating tens to thousands of unique, yet properly branded, Websites,” said Dan Ryan, executive vice president of marketing and business development for Stellent. “META Group’s study illustrates how companies can reap significant time and cost savings by leveraging Stellent’s multi-site ability to enable both technical and non-technical business users to quickly, easily develop Websites and maintain accurate Web content.”
