Deque Systems Inc. announced the release of Deque Undoc for PDF®, a new software solution that transforms Portable Document Format (PDF) files into HTML and XML. Undoc for PDF® transforms PDF files without an original source document into well structured HTML and XML for repurposing.

The new solution makes it easier for users to convert PDFs into HTML for editing and web site publishing. Using Undoc for PDF®, web content can be presented without the need for an external plug in. The HTML content generated by Undoc for PDF® can be made accessible with Deque Ramp Ascend® to meet Section 504 and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act requirements in the United States and W3C Web Accessibility Initiative standards internationally. Once made accessible, the HTML can be used to generate an accessible PDF using supported third-party PDF generation solutions.

Repurposing PDF content into XML empowers organizations to manage business documents more effectively with content management systems, web portals, electronic records management and customer relationship management solutions. XML has become increasingly popular for complex printing for catalogs and government publications. XML has been broadly adopted by leading technology vendors as a means to promote document content reuse and repurposing.

A cross-platform solution, Deque Undoc for PDF® supports Microsoft Windows 2000®, Microsoft Windows XP®, Macintosh OS X®, Linux, and Unix®. Undoc for PDF® supports interactive and batch transformations allowing "hands free" conversion of large volumes of PDF content. In addition to standard XML and HTML transformation, Undoc for PDF® optionally extracts CSS and XSL information, useful in restructuring the document for print and web use.

In addition, Deque has included comprehensive graphics features including inline graphics conversion. This feature enables the user to determine the output format of graphics as they are extracted from the original PDF. Graphic image formats include JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PSD, EPS and PNG.

"We had two goals with Undoc: accessibility and repurposing" says Preety Kumar, President of Deque Systems Inc. "We experienced the challenges of making PDF content accessible to persons with disabilities. So, we made certain Undoc and Ramp Ascend complement each other to ensure accessible content. Working with content professionals, we found that XML was emerging as a major issue and there was strong demand for a solution to transform PDFs into XML."

Richard Pike, Ireland based Director of Open Access, said "We are happy to offer our up and coming PDF accessibility service "EnablePDF" to our European clients based upon the latest Deque technology. It’s a very high quality, complete offering that enables us to offer a full service to the most demanding European institutions."

Mike Paciello, USA-based director of Open Access, added, "At Open Access, our goal is to build an on-demand web service that generates PDFs accessible to those with disabilities. Our collaborative business model, which reflects accessibility design guidelines from both Europe and the United States, positions us to push the envelope in next-generation accessibility. The Deque products represent the advanced technology that can help us meet our objectives."

Deque Undoc for PDF® pricing has been set at $695 per user. Volume and enterprise licensing is available from Deque Systems.

25.06.2004, Deque Systems Inc.
