Enonic's first US customer is the NASDAQ-traded company North American Scientific. Together with their partner; 1969 Communications, they chose Vertical Site after a thorough research of CMS providers.
North American Scientific is a single-source provider for high-quality products and technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The Company maintains offices in North America, Asia and Europe with its headquarters in Los Angeles, California.
Recently, North American Scientific acquired NOMOS Corporation and on May 5, 2004 launched a new corporate website reflecting this acquisition and new corporate branding initiatives. The acquisition combines two innovative radiation oncology companies and enhances North American Scientific’s portfolio of products and technologies for the treatment of cancer.
1969 Communications, a consulting company with clients such as Isuzu Trucks and Aaron Brothers, developed the solution for the new website. The new site contains content assembled from the various existing sites, along with a new structure and graphical design.
Vertical Site vs. Open Source CMS
1969 Communications evaluated available open source and commercial CMS solutions that had the ability to run on open platforms. 1969 chose Vertical Site from Enonic, based on the following criteria:
- Established product with solid documentation and support to developers as well as end users.
- Based on open standards, such as Java, XML and XSLT.
- Runs on JBoss and PostgreSQL. 1969 wanted to reuse existing know-how.
- Secure future integrations with legacy systems. So a Java platform was important.
- The right technical architecture and an intuitive user interface.
- Vertical Site is aimed at both technical and non-technical users.
"We considered several open source CMS frameworks, but none of them were as mature as Vertical Site. They were also too complicated for non-technical users. It was important for North American Scientific to be able to maintain the website by themselves", says Stacy Burgum, President, 1969 Communications.
Implementation
Installation and implementation of Vertical Site was done by 1969 Communications, with support from Enonic by email and Microsoft Messenger (MSN). Existing content from the companies’ sites were reused. 1969 Communications developed scripts to clean and import data into the new solution. They also integrated an open source search engine in Vertical Site and a Java-ticker, which feeds dynamic content from Vertical Site and NASDAQ stock quotes.
Technology in demand
"This implementation proves that we have come a long way with Vertical Site, and that the need for a more user-friendly and mature CMS based on Java is in strong demand in the market", says Morten Eriksen, CEO, Enonic.
