Websense, Inc., provider of employee Internet management (EIM) solutions, announced it has been named to FORTUNE Magazine's 16th annual list of America's Fastest Growing Companies, ranking number 13 out of the 100 companies listed. In addition to being number 13 overall, Websense was ranked number seven by earnings-per-share (EPS) growth, and number 11 based on revenue growth.
"For the head of any public company, growth, like yardwork, is the job that's never done -- the new blanket of autumn leaves falls before you're able to haul the first batch away," wrote FORTUNE Magazine reporter Ellen Florian in her introduction to the list. "Robust expansion of the kind that lands a company on a list like this one is rare."
Websense's total revenue for 2003 was $81.7 million, up 34 percent from $61 million in 2002, and billings, which represent the total amount of subscription contracts billed to customers, were a record $111 million, an increase of 35 percent from 2002.
"Websense is truly honored to be recognized by FORTUNE Magazine as one of the nation's top 100 fastest-growing companies," said John B. Carrington, chairman and CEO of Websense, Inc. "Websense delivered excellent top and bottom line financial results in 2003, further demonstrating the continued execution of our business model and sound financial management. In addition, our Web filtering technology has been selected as the market leader for the second consecutive year, and our new Internet security capabilities have continued to expand, providing a wide range of solutions to address the most critical challenges within the IT environment."
To compile the list, FORTUNE Magazine asked Zacks Investment Research to screen for U.S. companies with a minimum market cap of $50 million, at least $50 million in revenues over the past four quarters, 20 percent or better annual growth in sales and earnings per share over the past three years, and a few other traits (for details, see fortune.com/fastest). The final ranking reflects growth in revenues, EPS, and total market return for three years. The ranking excludes companies that were real estate investment trusts (REITs) over the entire three-year period: June 30, 2001 to June 30, 2004.
The complete list and state-by-state database of the companies, will appear in the September 6 issue of FORTUNE Magazine, available on newsstands August 30 and currently available at www.fortune.com.
In addition to the FORTUNE 100-Fastest Growing Companies award, Websense has received numerous other awards and accolades in the past two months alone. IDC, the leading provider of technology analysis, recently named Websense the market share leader in the Web filtering software segment of the secure content management (SCM) market for the second consecutive year. Websense was also ranked number 11 out of the 100 companies listed in FORTUNE Small Business Magazine's Top 100 Fastest-Growing Small Public Companies list.
