Captaris, Inc., a Business Information Delivery Solutions provider, announces the availability of Alchemy 8.0, previously owned by Information Management Research (IMR) Inc., a long-time leader in document archiving solutions. Alchemy 8.0 is the industry's first fixed content management suite that provides a fully integrated solution at the intersection of document management, records management and information lifecycle management -- and does so at a cost that is suitable for mid-market organizations.

The Alchemy 8.0 product suite handles multiple types of fixed content such as images, email, PDFs, CAD files, Microsoft Office files and COLD/ERM. The entire information lifecycle is managed with workflow and records management processes that control capture, management, archiving, retrieval, distribution, and finally, destruction. Alchemy 8.0 will be shipping in the U.S. in December.

"The majority of the unstructured content in an organization is 'fixed' content -- that is, content in its final form," explains Richard Medina, principal analyst at technology consulting and research firm Doculabs. "Organizations are under more pressure than ever before to manage this content effectively, not only for compliance and risk reduction purposes, but also to improve operational efficiency and productivity while reducing costs. This full-featured solution now handles a wide range of fixed content management applications. It's a straightforward implementation that makes great sense for mid-market organizations with limited IT resources," Medina adds.

Key Features and Benefits

Advanced Content Management Server -- Continuing in the Captaris tradition of providing a low IT commitment solution, Alchemy 8.0 with the new Advanced Content Management Server offers a single point of management for any fixed content repository needed to meet an organization's diverse applications and requirements. The 8.0 Server makes it easier for resource-constrained IT departments to manage all fixed content under one server, with several time-saving features including automated repository publishing, hot backup, remote administration and the ability to manage security and role attributes for groups of repositories.

* Library Services -- Alchemy 8.0 suite's comprehensive library services handles all types of content, including the ability to manage several versions of a document, check in and check out controls and easy administration controls to check document status. Alchemy 8.0 also provides fixed content management features within Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

* Alchemy Records Manager -- Designed by an advisory group of records managers, Alchemy Records Manager enables the creation of customized file plans, allowing records management professionals to create specific rules for records retention and holds -- even sophisticated, multi-phase retention instructions. End users utilize an easy-to-use mechanism for capturing and declaring records and administrators can easily create any number of record templates -- each with their own metadata requirements. Record linking, storage independence and records portability are all key components. Pre-defined links allow authorized users to associate one record with another for quick and easy access to the entire record set. The product also includes a DoD 5015.2 file plan template and is in process for DoD certification testing.

* Numerous Storage Options (Supporting ILM) -- Alchemy 8.0 provides ultimate flexibility for information lifecycle management (ILM), supporting a wide variety of storage options natively or through Captaris partners. Options include hard disk, NAS, CD, DVD, Plasmon UDO, Sony ProData Disc, optical libraries, WORM Tape, Content Addressable Storage and more. For portability or discovery or audits, Alchemy 8.0 provides the option of exporting selected records to a self-contained portable disc.

* Powerful Workflow -- The Alchemy 8.0 suite provides powerful workflow features through its integration with Captaris Teamplate Business Process Workflow. Alchemy Workflow solutions are currently available in the U.S.

* Mercury and MailStore -- Captaris has also consolidated two other product lines into the Alchemy 8.0 suite. The Mercury high-volume computer output product and the MailStore email archiving product that are both available as modules to an Alchemy 8.0 implementation.

Captaris recently announced the acquisition of IMR, one of the industry-leading Integrated Document Archive and Retrieval Systems (IDARS) vendors. The company's Microsoft-based solutions complement other Captaris solutions including the RightFax enterprise fax and e-document delivery, Teamplate business process workflow and Interchange information automation products. Alchemy extends Captaris Business Information Delivery solutions, providing even more impressive returns on investments for its customers within their existing IT infrastructure and platforms.
