Java

A programming language which is independent of the platform and is object oriented. Developed in 1995 by Sun Microsystems, it made a new form of interactivity in the web possible. It is mainly designed for the programming of small applications (so called applets) which can be placed into a website thereby increasing its functionality. The most important browsers contain a Java Virtual Machine and can therefore execute applets embedded in HTML documents.
